Rabbit Control
Rabbit control can be an expensive business; it cost money to control them and money if you don’t
There used to be a law compelling land owners to ensure Rabbits were controlled as much as possible, I am not sure if it still applies, looking at Rabbit numbers I don’t think it does.
The method of control for the non professional is quite limited, there are live catch traps, there is shooting, a good shot and a .22 air rifle will make a difference, if you are conscientious and go out once or twice a week.
My preferred method as a professional and I know this is not “green” but it is effective is Aluminium Phosphide pellet (gassing) it is not feasible for a professional pest controller to eradicate a warren and make a living if using traps, in gardens etc I use traps a lot but not on farming land etc.
The sporting method is to get some lads with Ferrets, they take a low % of a warren but if it is sustained they will make a difference.
Snaring is another option but once again it only accounts for a small % of the rabbit population in any specific warren.
I have friends who use hawks, but this is more for entertaining me and the hawks than serious pest control.
Last but not least there is fencing, if you do the fencing properly you can exclude rabbits from you garden or allotment, I do mile after mile of this type of fencing with fantastic results but it is not cheap, Defra suggest that 10 to 15 years is the life of a well constructed fence using quality netting so the pay back will be worthwhile, it is important to “walk” the fencing every few weeks to ensure the little beggars have not found a way through.
